“An American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy comes to realize that the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of grisly murders.”
Suspiria takes us into the Argento world of the Three Mothers. This is actually the first film of Argento’s that I had ever seen. Although, I have to admit that I had heard the name before, mentioned in passing in the movie “Juno.”
It has been mentioned in other horror circles as well so I knew I had to see it. And it didn’t disappoint. Don’t get me wrong, it has its flaws but for 1977, its artistic status can’t be argued.
While he didn’t have the special effects of the 21st century, Argento instead made use of things like contrasting colors – mainly red, blue, green and white. It truly amazed me that the bold use of vivid color almost slammed emotions into you.
SPOILERS FROM HERE!
As for any actual horrific scenes, the opening may have some gore but the one cringe factor for me was Sarah. When Suzie is confronted with Sarah’s corpse, it is complete with pins in her eyes. There’s always something about eyes that messes with me.
The plot is a little sketch to me as I’m not sure why Suzie was so important to Helena Markos. I know Markis is supposed to be Mother Susperiorum but something about the plot just feels lost.
Also, why does a ballet academy have a room full of razor wire?
