“In the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.”
This os one of Stephen King’s books that never could have been made properly in the late 80’s when it was released. There was an adaptation in the 90’s that I”ll be reviewing but there was so much that was even more taboo in the mainstream cinema.
It is a movie that proves our childhood fears. Pennywise pulls deep into your insecurities and uses that to get the blood flowing. To me, that makes you wonder, did you really see what you saw as a kid?
I also love that the set of protagonists are the ones considered the “losers.” It shows how resilient your children really can be. Being a “loser” just means that you are exposed to some of life’s hardest times and able to take on the true bullshit of life.
And yes, I was a loser as a kid.
Pennywise is that boogyman we all know. He was the bully who beat you. He was that creepy man down the street who watches you a little too long. He was the racially bigoted ass that threw rocks at the only black kid in town.
Oh. And Pennywise eats kids.
There are some parts from the book that I am glad got left out
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT
After the Loser’s Club defeats Pennywise, they head back out but – nay nay! In the book? Bev saves them all. How? Hmm.
The Loser’s Club gets lost in the sewer tunnels, seemingly trapped forever until Beverly tells them “You all have to put it in me.”
Yeah. That’s right. A pubescent orgy. NOPE.
