“Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.”
It feels weird to be reviewing a horror movie that’s based on a true story. I had actually followed the Warren’s career well before this movie came out so I was both excited and skeptical as to how it would turn out. There were some things that, with any movie, I was “eh” about, but let me tell you, I was not unimpressed.
One of the things that I was excited about hearing was that James Wan was directing. Before the Conjuring, he’d delivered such horror gems as Insidious and Saw. So without a doubt, this director can create visual stunners.
The Conjuring doesn’t have to rely on gore or flashy monsters, but instead it gives you a slow build of fear seem from not just the homeowners’ POV, but their daughters as well. And, by incorporating the children’s game “Hide and Clap,” Wan shifts innocent fun into tense buildups of fear.
VERY MILD SPOILERS FROM HERE
The other thing I do like is the family aspect of the film. It centers around the love of Ed and Lorraine as well as how they finally freed Carolyn by reminding her of her children.
SIDE NOTE
If you get the chance, there is a documentary on Amazon Prime about the real house where the even took place called “The Sleepless Unrest.” It’s worth the watch.
