I get this question a lot from the people in my life. Horror movies are my number one go-to. Even if I’ve seen it a million times, I don’t care. I mean, I like a lot of major motion pictures, mostly action or comedy. I am not a romantic comedy chick. Sorry, I never had an urge to watch “Sleepless in Seattle.” But, as a child of the 80’s/90’s I was a fan of some John Hughes and such.
But I always come back to horror. Why? Well, let’s talk about a few things.
Horror is an Escape
For the most part, aside from the serial killer true story things, horror movies are about fictional monsters, human or not. This means that when I put on a horror film, my brain gets to move away from the tax paying, yard trimming, dishwashing mundane aspect of normal life.
Horror is an Over the Top Expression
Each writer and director has had a lot of the problems and frustrations that we have had over time. And instead of pushing down the trauma of living in this world, they transfer that into entertainment.
Horror Gives a Voice
This one tends to give people a double take. But hear me out. Horror is a way for many minority cultures – specifically the LGBTQ+ – to show you the struggles they feel. As one of those people, I can tell you that it’s true. The earlier horror especially. Think about it! Transformation into “monsters” not accepted by society? Also, you need to watch “Queer for Fear” by Shudder.
Getting a Little Scare Ups the Adrenaline
Okay, so I really don’t get scared… at all. I’ve always just had this psychotic love for the movies. But I love watching the reaction of my friends. It’s getting their heart pumping and letting them feel that little rush of “oh shit!” but then when the credits roll, the roller coaster is over.
That’s just some of the reasons I love horror. I’ll make little blurbs like this now and then. Just want to let you know who you’re seeing!
