“Heidi, a radio DJ, is sent a box containing a record – a “gift from the Lords”. The sounds within the grooves trigger flashbacks of her town’s violent past. Is Heidi going mad, or are the Lords back to take revenge on Salem, Massachusetts?”
There are three things that you can count on with any Rob Zombie movie. 1) His wife will be in it. 2) There will be gore. 3) There will be nudity. Wait. Four things because he also tends to include some awesome classic rock.
“With destiny you can predetermine the outcome, but with fate, fate leave you no choice.” One of the most eerie and haunting lines in this movie and the character who speaks it is named Megan.
How long can it take for revenge to rear its head? In this movie, it takes centuries. The Salem Witch Trials took many innocent lives but this movie questions that if indeed evil witches burned, would they exact their revenge and how?
There is everything from haunting religious and sexual imagery to the ever lingering question of what can persist over time – lineage.
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT
The first time I saw this movie, I had thought that Heidi was going to be a descendant of the head witch but I have to admit that it was a nice twist to have her be a descendant of the reverend.
The undertones of drug addiction may make this movie a little heavy for some. Heidi had been clean and attending meetings to keep her sobriety when this began and the dark influences that push her back to using are a metaphor for things that haunt us from our past.
The ending confuses me some. She seems to birth some sort of anti-Christ and all the women of Salem come to a theater and die? It’s well work the watch and maybe one of you Duckies can help me figure it out.
