“Carrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom.”

As if getting your period wasn’t bad enough… You have to give it to Stephen King for solidifying how abusive and messed up high school is. Opening to the uncomfortable incident of not getting your first period till high school, this couples with another awakening. Boom! Telekinesis!

Man, if only my first period came with that.

Feeling your body go through changes is har enough but not to even be prepared and then to have your peers mock your fear? I couldn’t even imagine. Add to that a zealot mother and you have a volatile cocktail.

We see four reactions to this opening scene play out: Carrie’s discovery, her mother’s rage, Sue’s regret, and Chris’ narcissistic reaction to being held accountable for her actions. Though most of the movie doesn’t play into a tom of cinematic visual horror, the third act steps it up.

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT

They say that Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn and as that pig’s blood falls, you see all form of self restraint slip from Carrie as she hears the echoes of her tormented past. In such a flurry of emotions, no one is safe from her wrath.

Top it off with her mother killing her and her killing her mother… while an extreme example, the bullying of high school and the pressure put on teens to by their parents is laid bare for all to see in horror glory.
