“Kirsty is brought to an institution after the horrible events of Hellraiser (1987), where the occult-obsessive head doctor resurrects Julia and unleashes the Cenobites and their demonic underworld.”

Yes, it may seem like I’m on a small Hellraiser kick but they were playing this sequel on “Last Drive In with Joe Bob Briggs” and what better way to rewatch a movie for a review than with commentary from another critic?

We pick up right away with Kristy waking in a mental ward hours after the massively gory battle with the Cenobites and her uncle Frank. Of course, this makes a nice solid, almost prison like situation to confine her with her fears.

The bonus to this movie is that we get to see the origins of Pinhead. He was never meant to be a major character but let’s face it, Doug Bradley makes Pinhead one of the most regal and terrifying horror monsters.

In this sequel, we are treated to the return of Julia but the hands of a psychotic shrink. Together, they take us out of our world and into the realm of the Cenobites,

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT

Again, we find that Pinhead ho self is not the primary antagonist and we are introduced (sort of) to what is puling the true strings. The Leviathan.

It grants the power of the Cenobites to the psycho shrink and is the main reason Julia is allowed to return at all.

Another key point is that the previously introduced Cenobites are confronted with their human origins and actually slain. This plays a major part in a key aspect of the third movie.

In the end, it is once again the horror of what humanity is capable of rather than mythical monsters here. To which I question: What is Heaven or Hell if not the individual’s perception?
