“When a group of strangers at a dusty roadside diner come under attack by demonic forces, their only chance for survival lies with an archangel named Michael, who informs a pregnant waitress that her unborn child is humanity’s last hope.”
To be honest, I should just have to say Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid to get your attention for this movie. But let’s toss in a good old fashioned apocalypse to spice up the deal.
Here is the twist of this apocalypse – it is being started by God himself. He’s doing a bit more theatrics this time than just a giant flood. and the Archangel Michael believes that this is the wrong course. So much so that he gives up his wings to try and protect a waitress who is pregnant with mankind’s last hope.
There are members of humanity beings possessed along the way to try and thwart the birth of the child. Possessed by demons? Oh no, angelic soldiers.
A major subtext here is choice. Do we blindly follow orders because of the rank of things or do we gather up the strength to stand our ground for what we truly believe is right?
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT
The final confrontation between Gabriel and Michael is perfection. As God restores Michael to his full archangel form, he’s given the message that while Gabriel gave God what he asked for, Michael gave him what he needed. He needed to see that humanity deserved a second chance and that not all of his angels were blindly obedient.
Hm. No comment there. Just gonna… put that out there.
