“After moving into a suburban home, a couple becomes increasingly disturbed by a nightly demonic presence.”

Into each generation… wait, that’s a Buffy quote. But still, time had passed since the success of the Blair Witch Project and a new generation was introduced to the found footage genre right here.

I actually remember being at work when I heard about this movie. one of my coworkers was absolutely petrified by this movie because she though it was actual documentary footage and started talking about real life possessions she had seen in her life.

So yeah. I had to watch it.

There are two major things that stand out to me in this movie. 1. Don’t mess with things you don’t understand and 2. Male fragility is the downfall of most situations. If that second item caught you off guard, let me elaborate.

Micah is being the typical male in the sense that he thinks he has the power and he is the one who will control this situation. It is a trait that is embedded in the toxic masculine culture.

But this is a brilliant film showing the power of minimal concept with maximum acting. There aren’t flashy monster effects or CGI. In fact, most of the scares come from sound and suspense alone.

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT

So, there is actually a different ending that I had seen before the theatrical ending. Instead of Katie killing Micah and just disappearing, she actually killed him and slit her throat. That would have killed the series.

No pun.
