“Two criminals and their hostages unknowingly seek temporary refuge in a truck stop populated by vampires, with chaotic results.”
Before I start this review, can we just say:
- George Clooney
- Quentin Tarantino
- Harvey Keitel
- Juliette Lewis
- Salma Hayek
- Cheech Marin
- Danny Trejo
- Tom Savini
I could leave it just like that and you would know you need to watch this. An all star cast like this deserves an epic director and Robert Rodriguez steps in to give us what we need.
The main plot is really the family ties. Both between the Gecko brothers and the preacher’s family. What would you do to protect your blood? (Okay, didn’t mean that pun but it fits.)
Rodriguez isn’t afraid to pull back the curtain to show you the grit and dirt of life. Oh, and he throws in vampires. And these vampires know exactly how to lure in their prey: A Mexican strip club. Not just any club but one with the best front hype man played by none other than Cheech Marin.
Once inside, they’re informed that this bar is for bikers and truckers. Warning sign number one! Those are people usually traveling solo who may take a while to be noticed missing.
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT
Once the vampires are revealed, the pace of the movie kicks into overdrive and the body count begins to rise. Quickly the seduction turns into an all you can dismember buffet.
Nothing compares to the the final scene. First off, Seth’s contact didn’t even know the place and was picking a random spot. Then they pan out at all the abandoned trucks… and the Aztec temple. Perfecto.
