“Natives of a small isolated town defend themselves against strange underground creatures which are killing them one by one.”

While my mom wasn’t a huge horror fan, this was the one movie we both could watch a million times over. Kevin Bacon? Reb McEntire? Isolation horror? Done.

As the body count begins, it’s assumed that there is some maniac killer who’s taking up a serial killer mental. And really, with no visible trace of anything else, that’s a laid assumption.

This movie makes great use of practical effects that don’e even require the actual monsters for most of the movie. It also utilizes great acting – and comedic timing. Some of the lines in this movie are almost as quotable as Army of Darkness.

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT

Where the hell did the three monsters come from? My though follows the seismologist. I think they were laying dormant for centuries.

I was happy about the survivors. Not going to lie, the first time I saw it I though the pogo stick girl was going to get it.

In any case, this may have been the oddest movie for a ten year old to bond with her mom on. Or, wait… was this the real start of my love for horror?
