“A teenage boy and his friends face off against a mysterious grave robber, known only as the Tall Man, who employs a lethal arsenal of unearthly weapons.”
Many people have stated that they’re pretty sure that not even the director knows what this movie is about. Even after watching all five Phantasm movies, I’m stumped. But maybe that’s the draw.
We open to a death scene that vies you a surprise right away where the beauty turns out to be the Tall Man in disguise (RIP Angus Scrimm) who then kills a man and makes it look like a suicide.
There is a really great artistic quality to this movie with its marbles mausoleum and contrast lighting. It keeps you almost attracted to the film.
I think that this may have been one of first movies where a young boy is the one trying to defeat the monster rather than an adult. But don’t quote me. I’m old and my memory fails sometimes.
So, if I’m wacthing this correctly. ,there is a Tall Man who is taking bodies and making dwarf minions and there are silver spheres that fly around and drain the blood from people.
Okay… why?
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT
If there is one thing I am not a fan of, it is the cop-out ending. To say that everything was just Mikey’s dream to cope with Jody dying a car accident? Oye.
But, since there are four sequels, we can safely say the dream assumption was wrong.
