“Five friends travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.”
So, this is going to sound stupid to some but to those of Earth based beliefs, its a little hard. The “monster” of the movie is the ancient spirits in the woods. And as an eleven year old, it scared the crap out of me.
Even watching now, I get a little shiver instead of fear but that’s saying something since this mama duck doesn’t get scared.
Scared or not, this movie introduces us to the brilliant direction of Sam Raimi and the iconic acting of Bruce Campbell. While the subsequent sequels offered a more comedic take, Raimi went straight for the fear factor here.
Side note: Why do so many 80’s horror movies have a character names Linda? SO MANY!
Fear isn’t just created with gore. Raimi used the camera as the monster to chase people or watch them. And the most horrific scene to me nowadays is the pencil in ankle. I can almost feel that one.
Isolation horror with a cabin in the woods really found its footing here. As each member succumbs to the unleashed cursed, you start to question your santity.
MILD SPOILERS
No harm ever came from reading a book, right? Well, you can save yourself by burning a necronomicon bound in human flesh. This may be the only time I will condone the burning of a book.
