“On the way to California, a family has the misfortune to have their car break down in an area closed to the public, and inhabited by violent savages ready to attack.”
While widely known for Freddy Krueger, Wes Craven was no stranger to horror before “Nightmare” began. Though it initially didn’t receive high praise, the fact that someone decided to do a remake speaks volumes.
This movie can be a little rough to watch as, yet again, I find myself watching animal deaths and now we toss in suggested baby eating and sexual assault. So yeah, it’s on the heavy side.
Based some on the legend of Sawney Bean, we are introduced to a feral family led by “Papa Jupiter” and how they survive by picking off stray travelers to eat and steal supplies from.
One of the scariest things to think about is what someone will do to survive. And there are things we are not prepared to defend against.

The ending gave me a little joy as the surviving dog tore into one of the bag guys. And imagine Ruby watching, and even helping, in killing her family She’s free but at what cost? What does it really mean to survive something like that?
