“A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.”

There are several stresfull times in a family’s life. Moving is one of them. But that gets pushed aside when your child falls into a some sort of coma that medical science can’t explain. How do you deal with that?

There are two routes here: Fear or denial. Renee can see that there is something more going on while Josh hides away in his denial.

I love watching these movies for Elise. She’s caring, understanding and never pressures anyone to believe what they aren’t ready to. And the bicker duo of Ticker and Specks helps to bring levity to the situation.

James Wan knows his camera work. The cinematography alone is almost a reason to to watch. The movie is done in muted cool tones that lull you into the darkness.

The movie talks about ghosts without having to pull from any form of spirituality so it doesn’t give any one specific religion the limelight and they can make their own rules. Like the “Further.”

This version of purgatory has shadow work, corners, jumps and who knows what. And it’s this place where our protagonists must save the young boy from.

SPOILERS FROM HERE

I watched this originally before the second movie had been announced and I was so pissed about Elise dying. But if you watch the sequels, it makes a full connections. Which does wonders for their profit margins.
