“Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.”

I was a little leery when I saw the remake wasn’t going to star Bruce Campbell but I’m glad I watched it anyway.

Instead of the old trope of horny teens going to drink and sex it up in the woods, they take it a different route and have the isolation used to detox a loved one from drugs. But even the most honest of intentions can go south when you find a basement of gore and a book made of human flesh – which you decide it’s a smart idea to read from.

Now, this is a good and proper scare flick. The plot tracks, the acting is on point and the gore effects range from extreme to shiver inducing.

The evil moves through the cast almost like a virus, first taking Mia in the forrest like as was done in the first movie, then spreading to them one at a time.

SPOILERS FROM HERE.

Sometimes the most damaged people can be the most heroic. With everyone else dead, Mia still pulls herself (ha, no pun) through the blood and pain to kill the evil entity.

In recovery, this would be a pretty intense version of your “moment of clarity.”
