“A young African-American visits his White girlfriend’s parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.”
Horror comes in more forms than slashers and imaginary monsters. And Jordan Peele taps into that fear. While yes, this fear shines a light on the African American community, it pulls that light onto many minorities and other fears.
There are two themes within this move. No, wait. Not exactly. There is a blatant reference to racism that we see starting from the first scene but there is also this underlying fear of those things that make us feel trapped by our own mind.
The mother who practices hypnosts does so in a way that you see is not legit. The sounding in the teacup mimics the old trope of a metronome, lulling her victims into a state of focus that makes them susceptible to suggestion without ever asking them for their permission.
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT
I knew there was something wrong with the “assimilated” African Americans in the creepy white suburbs. But brain transplants? Did not see that coming.
It is the ultimate metaphor. The African American community has been sought after by racist pieces of shit s simply vessels for their own will. This movie puts it right in your face.
Watch this.
