“Tromaville has a monstrous new hero. The Toxic Avenger is born when meek mop boy Melvin falls into a vat of toxic waste. Now evildoers will have a lot to lose.”

I have to admit with some shame that I did not see this movie until this year when I saw it on the Last Drive In. Now, that is not to say that I was oblivious to the movie that launched Troma Entertainment into the mainstream media. (NOTE: There may be a feature post about Troma later.)

Let’s be clear, if you go to watch this movie as a serious, scientifically accurate piece of horror comparative art…. you’re going to be high disappointed and you’re going to miss out on the humorous adventure.

A stereotypical dorky 80’s outcast is the target of upper-crust bullies resulting in a prank-gone-wrong that dumps him into a massive vat of toxic waste. The toxins then transform this ninety-eight pound outcast into a gigantic, misshapen creature that is hellbent on avenging all the outcasts by killing bullies in some interesting ways. (The sauna scene is one of my top picks for his options.)

Complete with a side of love story with a blind girl who can “see” hi for who he is, we’re taken on a roller coaster ride that provides us with that satisfaction of a the good guy winning and that little bonus of gross 80’s practical special effects.

No spoilers, just go enjoy.

OH! And the remake is coming out soon…
