“A young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, but encounters a darkness that causes her to question her faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.”
Ah, yes. Aside from sequels, we have the ever present prequel. Once again, these films are usually met with a fair amount of critique. My critique here? Not as harsh as you’d think.
First off, the opening pays respect to the priest’s death in the original without ripping it off. From there we emerce ourselves in the work of Margaret – a young woman yet to take her vows, flying from America to Rome in order to do so.
The young Margaret is working with children at a Catholic orphanage where an air of mystery clouds a painting child and a fellow nun to be named Luz. After one eventful night at a disco, behold the unraveling.
There are many mi-directions and nods to the original film. I think that is why I ended up enjoying this one. It puls from the times and also keeps the true heart of the premise.
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT
Twist it up! It’s not the girl we thought it was. Well, kind of. I knew Margaret played a part but anyway.
TWO BABIES! This was the best part of the movie. It could lead into some “one is the anti-Christ, so what is the other?” movies.
What do you think?
