A caving expedition goes horribly wrong when six explorers become trapped and ultimately pursued by a strange breed of predators.

Emotional horror. That is legit a sub-genre for me. Take a protagonist who is trying to deal with a PTSD incident and throw them into another PTSD incident.

This opening is intense. It’s hard. It’s so emotional. And it deals with the death of a child. So be forewarned.

Now, if you can get through the opening, you find yourself in the world of thrill seekers who decide to go spelunking. And did I mention the main cast is all women? Badasses to the core. And for the first majority of the movie, the horror is actually the fear of that dark and deep cavern where you could literally die at any moment from any of mother nature’s boobytraps.

Then come the monsters. Cavern dwellers that don’t rely on sight since they are living in the deep darkness.

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT

To be real, the monsters are the side item here. The real danger is human nature and what we do in situations that seem in complete despair. What are we capable of? Doing anything to survive.

But there is a second movie. So don’t be too quick to think that certain people are truly gone.
