“A newly-possessed high-school cheerleader turns into a succubus who specializes in killing her male classmates. Can her best friend put an end to the horror?”

I am SO upset that they picked the wrong Hole song for the ending. Just saying. Hole LITERALLY made a song called “Jennifer’s Body.”

Okay, rant over.

Directed by a woman, about what women/girls go through in high school with the BEST metaphors possible? YES! Give me more. Because in This early 2000’s vibe, a lot of female POV was not given much respect. And there is no better way to express your voice than the horror genre.

Even in the opening, we are shown the difference in high school experiences and what it means in the female world. There’s the popular girl and the geeky girl who contrast and compliment each other at the same time. Those are the polarities that every woman felt in high school. (Side note: is that the real horror?) This movie also shows the manipulation that women can exert over men. “These? Are smart bombs.”

There is also the subtext of what people will do for popularity. In fact, it literally brings that to the forefront. We all want to be special and more than someone who fades into the background. And how our lust is a hunger – and a deep one.

The gore factor is secondary while the horror itself gives way to banter that shows our need for involvement. And the one liners are amazing.

There is also the connection between the two main characters Jennifer and “Needy.” It pulls towards what it means to be a friend in high school. That connection runs deep. Girls are made to pull each other closer in defense of the whole world. But is that always a good thing?

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT

Being a virgin isn’t everything! Tell the kidnapper!

Also, I LOVED the twist where you get the powers of a demon. And vengeance is golden. But again, they ended the movie with Hole’s “Violet” while they actually had a song called “Jennifer’s Body.” Seriously.
