Round 2! Fight! Oops, wrong genre.

One of the things that I will say I love about this series is that they focus on how much Ed and Lorraine loved each other. Because at the core of everything they did, that was a crucial part. I just wish that the movies gave a bit more accuracy than that. I love the true stories of the Warrens. I have read up quite a bit and watched several documentaries.

But this is Hollywood and a good film needs a bit of finesse. Which this has plenty of.

The Warrens are whisked away to England this time, showing how the reputation of their deeds with the Catholic Church spread internationally. The haunting of the Enfield house is a slightly different investigation in the fact that there are TV interviewers and such involved even before they come to begin their investigation.

So is it a hoax? Is it for the attention?

I have to give extra kudos to Frances O’Connor for her portrayal as the mother. You can empathize with this character so heavily as she struggles to make her family safe and sound all by herself. There’s also a nice scientific counter argumentative character that helps give perspective to those that have – and still – speak out against the validity of the Warrens’ work.

This movie also introduces the character of the nun (we’ll review that movie later.) The vision and the use of Ed’s drawing make it nice and creepy to watch.

SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT

I like the idea that Lorraine’s sight is not all-powerful. The fact that a demon was able to block her abilities during the investigation gives her a more human side rather than being a divine being.

“I’m given and I’m taken. I was there at your first breath. You didn’t ask for me but I’ll follow you till death.” I love riddles. This isn’t the first movie to speak of demons being rendered powerless by the use of their name. It was kind of scary how Lorraine knew specifics about that demon.

I really wanted to scream at Ed with Lorraine when he decided to go in on his own. That goes against the first rule of horror movies! Never go in alone!
