“Eight years after her sudden disappearance in Egypt, a severely traumatized teenager is returned to her shattered family in New Mexico, triggering a visceral nightmare as they realize she is hosting an ancient, demonic parasite.”
If you are a GenX or Millennial, when you think of “The Mummy,” you think of the light-hearted film with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
Nonononono.
This is Lee Cronin. The man who helped make Evil Dead Rise and that sort of striking graphic horror is brought to this film. But that horror is not the focal point. To be honest, I was surprised that there was so much family dynamic explored in this.
At first it seems like a simple missing child story that, logically, haunts a family. But what’s more haunting? How about a mummified child? Cronin wanted to change the mythology here. While most Egyptian mummy movies revolve around Egyptian royalty like Pharaohs, this one explored the mummification as a way to keep a demon bound.
Again, this is a Lee Cronin film. I didn’t want to give it a full five on gore but it’s close. Chose wisely.
SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT
I love demon mythology. And having a way to transfer demons from one vessel to another NOT BY THEIR CHOICE is creepy as all get out. Most horror stories aren’t known for a clean cut happy ending but this one… it was a justified ending.
I thought it was just goin to end with the father. He was making the sacrifice for his child and most audiences will accept that as a good ending. But then they take it a step further. They say “Yeah, sometimes karma really is a bitch.” And then having it go back to the magician? Ha. Beautiful.
