“Wendy Christensen and a group of teens who escaped a fatal roller-coaster crash face a bloody date with Death.”

James Wong returns behind the scenes as the director of this third installment. For those of you not keeping track, he is the OG director of the first film that kicked it all off. Which is probably why I actually enjoy the little twist on things in this one.

Yes, Wendy gets a vision. But then it’s not other little visions this time – it’s photos. She’s taken photos prior to the incident and each one holds a clue to the deaths that follow. This way, she isn’t the only one piecing them together. And these deaths do not dissapoint!

Shall we count them down again?

DEATH SPOILERS FROM THIS POINT

  1. The initial incident. A rollercoaster has a catastrophic malfunction, killing a portion of the senior class of high school students that are there to celebrate. Two of Wendy’s friends do not make it off and die here.
  2. Ashley and Ashley: We all know these type of girls. Superficial but not mean or malicious, just a little… airy? Tanning proves to be dangerous when you don’t heed the warning of “no beverages.” (Note: The transition scene from the tanning beds to dual coffins is perfect.)
  3. Franky: Ugh. This death did not stir any emotion because this guy was so annoying. Sexist and thinking he’s the one true gift to women. The anticipation in this scene was very well built and gave us a nice surprise death that was more “Ha!” than “Ohhh.”
  4. Lewis: The token “I make my own destiny” guy is a jock again this time (like in the first movie.) And to be fair, those high school weight rooms are a death trap when Death isn’t already looking for you. Every single step was sweet build up. And when the first “attempt” seems to miss him, the kill is even more sweet.
  5. Erin: Save one and slip to another. A closed home improvement store provides Death with more DIY options this time. Death “nailed” this one… ha.
  6. Perry: A character we didn’t even really know about! She was sneaking on the ride with Wendy’s sister. She is the most really bland death with just a pole impalement.
  7. Ian: Think you’re invincible? Ha! Take that! A cherry picker decided to pick him.
  8. Final three: The subway… well, watch to see.

All in all, this was an interesting take. I like the use of the photos instead of visions and the messy wrap up at the end.
