“Louis meets the vampire Lestat in 1910 New Orleans.”

It took me a while to start reviewing horror series. But I knew that when I did, I would start with this. As any Xenial girl, I LOVED the movie Interview With the Vampire and watched it on VHS over and over. So, when there came a way to watch it in series form, I could only salivate at the idea.

But with a new age comes a new point of view. This time, we start in 1910 New Orleans rather than a pre-civil war era. But some of the tropes and such are still at play: Racism and homophobia being the most prominent.

In this episode we are introduced to Daniel Malloy, the journalist who had an interaction with Louis de Pointe du Lac in 1973, who received tapes and an invitation to finish the interview he had wanted in his youth. He takes Louis up on his offer, flying to Dubai to make his interview complete.

There are key rules set up in this: yes, he still is vulnerable to sunlight. Yes, he remembers the Christian Slater style ending where Daniel wanted to become a vampire. Now, the reporter is more mature (and diagnosed with Parkinson’s.) So, the story is more mature.

Here, Louis is the man who runs a New Orleans brothel – something that the “white folk” let him do. Along this path, he meets the extravagant Lestat de Lioncourt. While the movie may have tip-toed around the homosexual themes in Anne Rice’s novels, the series does not.

BIG SPOILER MARK

The death of Louis’ brother is the kick-start of his vampiric fall. His brother was full on for the “Lord” but killed himself. So, if the Lord didn’t save his brother, why would he save Louis?
